An excerpt from Premonition by Etel Adnan (Kelsey Street Press):
The sun refuses to set. We wonder if continents aren’t themselves big animals unsure of their future; feeling to be abandoned children. Matter is the beginning and the end. Spirit is sweat rising to the surface of things, meant to be more audible than known, more vanquished than dead. And spirit floats, sometimes among clouds, and at other times sits in front of us, and we mistake it for a stranger. Fear arrives on four feet and leaves standing, having felled its victim.
