Nasa Image of Lightning Data in inner core of Hurricane Rita
There are hurricanes that come ashore with almost no lightning while others come in with much activity. There is still much mystery that resonates within Meteorology and weather. The term “freak storm” is seen by some scientists as a bit of a misnomer. Flux and variability are the constants of jet streams, atmospheric moisture profiles, large scale events like El Nino or La Nina and the MJO (Madden Julien Oscillation), reactions to topography, energy transport, regional and micro climate dynamics and much more.
A single cloud, to a cloud complex, to a short wave to a long wave trough are similar to a word to a sentence to a paragraph to a longer text (can even throw in other variables such as subtext, chapters to whole etc…) as components small to large exist within many variables, parameters, dynamics and possible result ranges. The “finished” or “published” text is but one of many possible forms and results and has been deemed a semantic finality not an absolute.
There is the classic story of the intruder caught “vandalizing” a painting in a well known painting. It turned out to be the artist who had an urge to do one more edit, one more draft, shift those variables and parameters one more time. It was not “finished” and vestigal variants and forms and elements large and small still ran in the artist’s mind.
The “freak” storm is linguistically insulted by the ugly brute terminology. It simply in one area in its form and life cycle has produced an unexpected or out of range mean calibrated result. This ironically in language can be compared to the written word moving into a set breaking area of new voice or experimentation in form either in one writer’s collected works or more interestingly in a field , genre or sub-genre. The elements of text, punctuation, grammar, semantics, semiotics and the ballast within vocabulary has produced an interesting result. It also has fought against the shear, dry zones , instability, complexity and other factors that could have torm the storm apart. The interesting storm behavior and interesting text have emerged from both great complexity and factors working against them to not be a “freak” or any other insulting term, but something freshly out of the usual norms and range.
