I said a while back that I would follow-up on my original post about Lana Del Rey’s latest album, Lust For Life, and I guess life got in the way. I was reminded of this post and my promise however when I tagged on Facebook about a bit of LDR news: she is retiring the song “Cola” due to a line in the song referencing Harvey Weinstein. “Harvey’s in the sky with diamonds and it’s making me crazy” is the line. I always thought she was saying “honey” not “Harvey,” but the more you know. Gross.
Lust For Life is a beautiful album, but it’s bloated. I think it could have been edited more so that the stronger pieces make more of an impact. I even attempted to make my own cut of the album the last time I posted about this and I took out a bunch of the weaker records (namely, “Coachella- Woodstock In My Mind” and the Sean Ono Lennon filler track “Tomorrow Never Came.” I wonder how Lana would describe her vision for the project, how she sees all the songs fitting together. But also, we have come to expect concept albums from her, and maybe this isn’t a concept album. Like maybe that’s not what she was going for? Or maybe she was going for a concept album and missed the mark?
